What are endpapers?

Endpapers are the thicker, more durable pieces of paper that are pasted at the beginning and the end of a physical book. The main purpose of endpapers is to keep all of the contents on the inside of the book connected to the outside cover of the book.

How and why are endpapers constructed?

One endpaper is pasted onto the inside cover of the book while the other endpaper is attached to a book block. Endpapers are a vital part of a book's construction because without them, the pages would not be able to lift from the spine in their usual arch when the book is opened.

How can endpapers be customized?

Leather-strapped endpapers [2]

Endpapers don't have to be a simple, plain sheet of paper. There's many ways for book producers to customize the endpapers on books, making then more artistically appealing. Endpapers can be made unique with various colors, designs, and prints. Additionally, a lot of interesting artwork is often found on endpapers! Some fantasy books, for example, come complete with maps and landscape art on the endpapers of the book. According to Rachel Ward-Sale's Wings Take Us, in order to customize endpapers, "endpapers have been sewn onto dyed vellum straps attached to the boards with leather straps."[3]
