An early form of the book. Although a sometimes unwieldy container for writing, scrolls have persisted for thousands of years.

Men Splitting Papyrus
This facsimile painting copies a detail from a scene of men harvesting and working papyrus in the tomb of Puyemre (TT 39) at Thebes. It is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
