Definition

A letterform, letter-form, or letter form is a term used especially in Typography, paleography, calligraphy, and epigraphy to mean a letter's shape. A letterform can be best described as a design, or shapes of letters or symbols, either as written by hand or as represented in a particular type font.[1] A letterform is a type of glyph, which is a specific, concrete way of writing an abstract character or grapheme. [2]

Origin

The photo above showcases the common anatomy of a letterform: an area of study that provides basic intellect regarding letters and their integral parts. It helps to educate the eye to recognize underlying structures of various designs.[3]

Often tied with Typography, the letter serves as the core unit and each is made distinguishable with its letterform.
