As the need for book marketing becomes more prevalent, publishing houses are encouraged to look at what kinds of digital content is best promoting books, and what genres and tropes sell best at any given time.[1] When the public has a general interest in a certain genre or trope, that is a trend.

Historically Popular Trends
With the arrival of the internet came a place for readers to band together to discuss their favorite books. TikTok (or its niche BookTok) have dominated the conversation surrounding book recommendations and have held massive influence over reader culture since its conception.
The most talked about genre on BookTok is romance, in particular adult romances.[2] Due to the historical popularity of romance, there are also certain tropes (or plots) that are mentioned for further clarification as to what kind of romance the book will be. Romantasy (a combination of romance and fantasy) is the most popular subgenre[2] but tropes are not inherently subgenres; rather they give the reader a basic overview of how the relationship progresses or how romantic feelings are achieved, such as tropes like Enemies to Lovers or Dark Romance, which deals in heavy or morally dubious themes.[3]
