Digital Printing

a printing technique that allows digital images to be easily transferred from one form of media to another.

  • It can involve sending files like PDFs or graphics from a computer to a printer
  • This process is best for short-run jobs and customization.
  • These bypasses traditional printing plates used in offset printing, which took very long

The Design of Books by Debbie Berne

"With the development of laser, inkjet, and digital printing technologies, options for professional-quality short-run printing finally emerged, called short-run digital printing (SRDP). Print on demand (POD), in which a book isn’t produced until some-one has ordered it, has taken us to the shortest possible run: one book at a time."

  • Digital Printing does have downsides as colors are limited to either CMYK or black. Errors can occur as well, but that is common everywhere.
  • Benefits include the ability to resurrect books and create limited supply. It opens up options to smaller publishers as they can publish whatever whenever, allowing cost or investment to not be an issue.
